As Life Happens: Music as Therapy

Worship has always had a special place in my heart. I remember going to church as a little girl and not wanting to be late because I didn’t want to miss praise and worship in the beginning. This is actually still the case now. But music has always been a huge part of how I connect with God. For this reason, I have started a routine that the first thing I have to listen to in the morning is praise and/or worship music. I love my R&B playlists a lot, but I cannot turn them on if I haven’t listened to some Gospel or Christian Contemporary Music (CCM) first. This allows me to set my mind on the Lord first thing in the morning. When I was driving to work, this time allowed me to set my intentions for the day and get my mind right before walking into my classroom to teach. It has changed my life to be honest. Over the past few years I have also implemented secular music fasts throughout the year when I am experiencing a rough season, or when I feel “off”. This has allowed me to empty myself and be filled with the Lord.

As I wrote about in my last blog post, this past year has had some really big plot twists for me. Music has been there to me up when I was down and reminded me of the truths about who I am and whose I am! It has a way of shifting my perspective. I move from only focusing on what I see around me to focusing my eyes on the Lord! Many times, I would find a song that spoke right to my current circumstance and I would keep it on repeat ALL DAY LONG! I would want to hear the same songs over and over, so I ended up creating a playlist of all of my favorite songs that spoke to me. I listen to this playlist in various ways. Sometimes I will go straight to a song I want to hear, other times I just let it shuffle through and I vibe along in the car, when I am cooking, or when I am cleaning the house. It just keeps getting longer and longer. The playlist is 8 hours and 25 minutes and counting! There is literally a song on here for everything!

For when I feel shameful and forget that there is not condemnation in Jesus Christ…

For when I feel victorious…

For when I feel that I am over ‘it’, but then ‘it’ hits me like a ton of bricks again…

For when I feel the ups and downs of life…

For when I feel alone…

For when I feel loved…

For when I feel discouraged…

For when I am grateful…

For when I am impatient…

For when I am in awe of the Lord…

What is your go to praise and/or worship song? Let me know below in the comments! I hope this playlist ministers to you as it has to me!

Love y’all!
